DETERMINERS
Introduction:-
A, An, and The are the most commonly used Determiners in English . They are usually used before nouns and are also called Articles. The is known as a Definite Article. It is used before both singular and plural nouns
Singular Plural
- The car The cars
- The man The men
- The bank The banks
A or An are Indefinite Articles. They are used before singular nouns.
Examples:-
There are many other Determiners in English, such as the ones listed below:
- Any
- That
- Those
- This
- Some
- Whichever
The Difference between Some and Any:-
Some and Any describe indefinite quantities or numbers, where the number and quantity of the object do not matter.
Examples :
Asha needs some money.
We haven't got any help.
Do you have any nails?
Some is usually used in affirmative statements and Any is used in questions and negative statements.
While making an offer or a request and when eager for a positive response, we use some in questions.
Examples:-
Will you please buy me some candles from the shop?
Shall I buy you some books?
Any is used in affirmative statements after a negative or limiting word.
Examples:-
Sushma never does any work at home.
They seldom have any money with them .
Ram ignores any advice offered.
Sometimes, Any does appear in affirmative statements and Some is used in questions.
The same rules that apply for Some and Any also apply for somebody/ anybody, someone anyone/ somewhere/ anywhere, something /anything.
Numerals and Determiners:-
Numerals are determiners when they appear before a noun .
Cardinal numerals express quantity.
Examples :
one book
two books
twenty books
Ordinal numerals express a succession.
Examples:-
first impressions
second chance
third prize
Much and Many:-
The determiner Much is used with uncountable nouns.
The determiner Many is used with plural nouns.
Examples:-
There isn't much salt in the food.
Do you have many friends in Bangalore?
Much and Many are usually used in negative sentences and questions.
Examples:
There aren't many rooms in this house.
We didn't have much work today.
Do you know many people in this office?
Have you got much more work to do?
Much not usually used in positive sentences. Instead, a lot of or lots of is preferred.
Examples:
Suma has lots of money.
There was a lot of water in the pond.
Many is used very often in affirmative sentences, but a lot of or lots of is used more frequently in spoken English.
Examples:-
There are many ways to perform this task (or lots of ways).
These days, many people live in nuclear families (or lots of people).
Much is used in positive sentences when it is preceded by so, too or as .
Examples:
He is worm out as a result of too much responsibility.
Seema has so much work to do, she might return late.
In spite of being the youngest, she eats as much food as the other older children.
Those and That
That is used for singular nouns and Those for plural nouns.
Examples:-
That is a book .
Those are books.
Some Determiners express quantity .
Examples:-
Both parents
Many people
Each person
Every night
Several computers
Few excuses
All examples
Enough water
No escape
