What is Prepositions ?

Prepositions:-

A Preposition introduces the noun or pronoun in a sentence. It establishes a relationship between the

object and the rest of the sentence. It can never stand alone but it can have more than one object .

The object of a Preposition is a Noun or Pronoun.

Examples:-

The flowers are in the vase .

The book is under the desk.

She wrote to Manasi last summer.

The children climbed the mountain without fear.

There was rejoicing throughout the land when the king was defeated.

The spider crawled slowly along the wall.

The dog is hiding under the stairs because he knows he will be punished for chewing up a new pair of shoes.

The following is a list of Prepositions for your reference:-

above, before, across, behind, after, below, around,

beneath, on, from, at, between, in, Inside, into, like, near, up,

during, Except, over, past, within, with, since, through, till, beside,

 Prepositions of place and movement - In/ At / To:-

 These prepositions are used to express movement and position in a place/ location.

Examples:-

  • Stay in India 
  • Learn at home
  •  Work in Mumbai

Use At with static (non-moving) verbs and place.

 Prepositions of Place  - In At/ On

 These Prepositions are used to express the position of objects.

 Use In with spaces.

In is used with bodies of water.

  • In the river

In is also used with lines.

Examples:-

  • In a row

  • In a queue

Use At with places.

Examples:-

  • At the end of the street

At is used with place/ positions on a page.

  • At the top of the page
  •  At the bottom of the page
At is also used with group of people .

  • At the back of the class 
  • At the front of the class

Use On with surfaces.

  • On the wall
  • On the floor
  • On the table

On is used with small islands.

On is used with directions.

Prepositions of Time and Date-In/ At/ On 

These prepositions are used to express the occurrence of some event . In is used with month, vents and periods of time.

Examples:-

  • In August
  • In 2002
  •  In the eighties

Use In with a period of time in the future.

Examples:-

  • In a few weeks
  • In a couple of days

At is used with precise time.

Examples:-

  • At six o'clock
  • Af 10.30 am

On is used with days of the week.

 Examples:-

  • On Monday
  • On Fridays

Use On with specific calendar days.

Examples:-

  • On Diwali day
  •  On October 22nd

Note: You can say "in" the morning, 'in' the afternoon or 'in' the evening, but it is always 'at' night.
