Objectives:-

 On the completion of this lesson you will be able to

  • Understand the role of Question Tags
  •  Use the correct tags for a given group of sentences



Introduction:-

Question Tags are contracted contracted questions, attached to statements. They serve two main functions:

 1) To involve the listener in the conversation and to encourage a response. 

By using a Question Tag, you are seeking confirmation of an answer that you already know.

Example:-

 That actor has done a good job, hasn't he?


2) To confirm what you think is true.

Example: 

I have switched off the computer before leaving, haven't I?


How to form Question Tags:-

Most Question Tags are formed keeping the following rules in mind.

 1. Positive statements

 In a positive statement repeat the auxiliary verb in the negative and add the subject.

Example:

 He's absolutely crazy, isn't he?

2. Negative statements

 In a negative statement, repeat the auxiliary verb in the positive and add the subject.

Example:-

 He isn't crazy, is he?

3. However, there are exceptions such as the following sentences.

  • Let's eat out, shall we? (use shall after let's)
  • I'm smarter than you aren't? (use aren't after I'm) 
  • Step in here, please, will/ would you? (use will would after imperatives)


Points to Remember:-

  • Question Tags are contracted questions, added to statements for emphasis.
  • They are used to involve the listener in a conversation
