-QUESTION WORDS

 Introduction:-

 Question words are used to ask about specific qualities, times, place,  people and so on They are different from Yes/ No questions such as "Do you Live in Delhi ? The following are some frequently used question words :

who? when? why? what? what...for? what...like? where? which? whose? how?



 Who

Who is used to ask questions about people (their name, identity, etc.. Who can be the subject or the object. If who is the subject, the verb is singular

Examples:

Who likes to swim? (subject)

 Who wants to study (Subject)

When

When is used to ask questions about time-periods of time, days and dales, and time of the day

Examples:

When are you going to Calcutta?

 When do you work out at the gym? 

When did you join this company?

Note: What time is used when we ask about the time of day

Example

What time will the play end? 

What time do we go?

What time is it?

Why

Why is used to ask about the cause or purpose of an action

Examples:

  • Why are you learning English?
  • Why don't you want to study further?
  • Why is it so cold in this room?

What...for

What .. .for is used to discover the purpose or function of an object. The word for always comes at the end of the question

Examples

      What's this money for?

      What do you use this cloth for?

What

What is used without a noun to ask about things, actions and events. What can be the subject or the object

Examples:

       What happened? (subject)

       What made you do that? (subject)

       What are you thinking of? (object)

       What shall we talk about? (object)

What..like

What ...like is used to ask for a description of someone or something The word like always comes at the end of the question

Examples:

       What was the movie like?

       What's the view from the top of the mouritain like?

Where

Where is used to ask questions about places or directions

Examples:

      Where are you going?

      Where's Patna?

      Where do you live?

Which

Which is used, with or without a noun, to ask questions about a person or thing when there is a limited choice. Which can be the subject or the object

Examples:

  Which bag is yours? (subject)

  Which colour do you prefer - red or blue? (object)

  With other limited choices, different question words can be used.

Examples:

       What kind of sports do you like best?

       Whose music do you like best - A.R. Rahman's or Anu Malik's?

       Which colour do you prefer -red or blue?

       Which ones do you prefer -the rod ones or the blue ones?

How

How (= in what way) is used to ask questions about the way something happens

or is done

Examples:

        How is the party?

       How do you make ice cream?

How is used to ask about the appearance of a person or an object. It is also used in greetings and questions about someone's health

Examples:

 How does this shirt look with these trousers? 

 How are you?

 How do you do?

After How, the following can be used:

  •          an adjective (big, expensive)
  •          an adverb (well. quickly)
  •          much or many (to ask about quantity or number)
  •          long or often (to ask about frequency or duration)

Examples

        How old is her husband?

        How much money does he make?

        How well does she play the piano?

        How long will you stay in Calcutta?

        How often do you play badminton

        How many grams of butter do you need for this cake?

Whose:

Whose is used, with or without a noun, to ask about possession

Examples:

        Whose shirt is this?
