Tenses

 Introduction

Verb Tenses are used to express time. You may find that many tenses in English do not have direct translations  in your language.

In English, it is possible to indicate the complex sequential relationship of events, actions and conditions by using a sequence of tenses in a sentence or in a paragraph.

Tenses are categorised according to the time frame: Past, Present and Future.

 Verb Tense: Time

The four Present Tenses are:

1. Simple Present: I go.

2. Present Progressive: I am going.

3. Present Perfect: I have gone.

4. Present Perfect Progressive: I have been going.

The four Past Tenses are:

1. Simple Past: I went.

2. Past Progressive: I was going.

3. Past Perfect: I had gone.

4. Past Perfect Progressive: I had been going

The four Future Tenses are:

1. Simple Future: I will go.

2. Future Progressive: I will be going.

3. Future Perfect: I will have gone.

4. Future perfect progressive: I will have been going.

Verb Tense: Aspect

The nature of the action described by the verb is the Aspect. There are three Aspects in Verb Tenses: Indefinite (or Simple). Complete (or Perfect), Continuing(or Progressive)

The three Indefinite Tense or Simple Tenses describe actions, but do not state whether the actions are complete.

They are used when the start and finish of actions, events or conditions are unknown or unimportant to the meaning of the sentences. The indefinite aspect is also used to indicate a habitual or repeated action, event or condition.

Examples:-

  • Simple Past: I  went.
  • Simple Present: I go.
  • Simple Future: I will go

The three Complete Tense or Perfect Tenses describe finished actions. They are used to indicate that the end of the actions, events or conditions are known .

The actions may, however, be completed in the present, past or future.

Examples:-

  • Past Perfect: I had gone.
  • Present Perfect: I have gone.
  • Future Perfect: I will have gone.

The three Incomplete, Continuous or Progressive Tenses describe unfinished actions.

Examples:

  • Past Progressive: I was going.
  •  Present Progressive: I am going.
  • Future Progressive: I will be going

A verb in the Continuing Aspect indicates that the action, event or condition is ongoing. It is also possible to combine complete and incomplete tenses to describe an action which was in progress and was then completed.

Examples:

  • Past Perfect Progressive: I had been going .
  • Present Perfect Progressive: I have been going.
  • Future Perfect Progressive: I will have been going.
